劉海粟，1896年生于江蘇武進(jìn)。1912年與烏始光等在上海創(chuàng)辦“上海圖畫美術(shù)院”，后改為上海美術(shù)專科學(xué)校， 1926年赴歐美及日本考察美術(shù)。1952年任華東藝專校長(zhǎng)。歷任南京學(xué)院院長(zhǎng)、名譽(yù)院長(zhǎng)、教授，上海美術(shù)家協(xié)會(huì)名譽(yù)主席，中國(guó)美術(shù)家協(xié)會(huì)顧問(wèn)、全國(guó)政協(xié)常務(wù)委員會(huì)委員。1981年意大利國(guó)家藝術(shù)學(xué)院聘任為院士，并頒贈(zèng)金質(zhì)獎(jiǎng)?wù)隆Ｓ?guó)劍橋國(guó)際傳略中心授予其“杰出成就獎(jiǎng)”。意大利歐洲學(xué)院授予其“歐洲棕櫚金獎(jiǎng)”。美國(guó)傳略研究所授予其“偉大成功大使”稱號(hào)。美國(guó)世界議會(huì)為其頒發(fā)金焰獎(jiǎng)。上海、南京、常州均建有“劉海粟美術(shù)館”。出版有《劉海粟畫集》、《劉海粟油畫選集》、《劉海粟國(guó)畫》、《學(xué)畫真詮》等。
Liu Haisu, born in Jiangsu Province in 1896, established Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts with Wu Shiguang and Zhang Yuguang in 1912. Later the academy was renamed as Shanghai College of Art. Since 1952, he was headmaster of East China College of Art. Also he has served headmaster, honorary president and professor of Nanjing College and the honorary chairman of Artist Association of Shanghai, consultant of Artist Association of China and the member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. In 1981, he was invited to be an academician of National Art Academy of Italy which also awarded him with the Gold Medal. Other honours that the artist have received include Outstanding Achievements Award by IBC in UK, the European Golden Palm Award by Italy Institute of Europe, Great Ambassador by American Strategy Institution and Golden Flame by World Congress in U.S.A. Museums were built and named after the artist in Shanghai, Nanjing and Changzhou. The publications that feature the master include Liu Haisu's Works, Selection of Artworks by Liu Haisu, Chinese Painting by Liu Haisu and The Essence of Art Study and so forth.
