Lin Fengmian (1900-1991), a Chinese painter and a pioneer of modern Chinese painting education in China, founded the National Academy of Art (now called the China Academy of Art) in Hangzhou. He embraced inclusiveness in academic research and sought to blend the best of both Eastern and Western art. Lin was an important part of the success story of fine art education in China, fostering some of the most renowned painters in 20th-century China, including Wu Guanzhong (吳冠中), Zao Wou-ki (趙無極), and Chu Teh-chun (朱德群).
As this year marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of art master Lin Fengmian, Xiling Yinshe Auction decides to organize exhibitions, seminars and auctions to celebrate the 120th birthday of the art trailblazer. The cooperation aims to study the master’s academic visions, the evolution of painting style and his contribution to modernism painting in China. Consignments are available in Hangzhou headquarters and branch offices in Beijing and Shanghai.

It is the honor of Xiling Yinshe Auction to receive trusts and supports from so many collectors and friends and acquire rare large significant works by Lin Fengmian which have not been auctioned so far in this special year. The paintings are masterpieces of mature painting style on various subjects, implying the artist’s experience from his teenage years to his important assignment after returning from Europe and his enthusiastic advocation of modernism painting.
The paintings are dedicated to one of the artist’s elders with the same family name ‘Lin’ from Meizhou of Guangdong province. Among them two were painted in colored ink on silk with ‘Xi Hu (West Lake)’ mark, supposed to be created in 1929 and 1932 when Lin was in his first tenure as a schoolmaster in Hangzhou. The earliest one was painted just before his departure for studying abroad in 1919, with a seal illustrated on one of his seal impressions made in his earlier days. There are also two works painted in 1939 when the artist passed through Hong Kong during the wartime. Most of the works are 7 or 8 Pingchi (equal to 33.3x33.3cm) except one which is as large as 15 Pingchi.
