Nain, which lies about 150 kilometers (100 miles) east of Isfahan on the old caravan route to India, is a small town of inhabitants with the tranquility of the Dasht-i-Kavir desert just a short distance away. Even here we can find traces of the influence of Shah Abbas, in carpet designs which derive from the palaces of Isfahan. The town earns its living today almost exclusively from the modern but excellent carpet industry and its associated trades, as well as from the sale of these exceptionally fine carpets which are prized throughout the world and which come onto the market via the bazaars of Isfahan. Under the PAHLAVI emperors, the central Persian city of Nain became one of the great weaving centers of Persia. Nain rugs are justifiably admired for their superb technical quality, outstanding craftsmanship and distinctive palette.
This example has a dark cream ground on which is arranged an extraordinarily complex system of floral arabesques, each flower head drawn in minute detail and beautifully coloured. The field is perfectly balanced by the pale cream main border, which contains a stylized palmetto meander and is flanked by two dark cream ground guards containing floral repeats. A very attractive example of one of the major groups of 20th century Persian carpets.
